DK Paul –
Penny and Her Doll by Kevin Henkes
On the first page, I can see why this book gets “much love.”
“Mama was weeding.” “There are a lot of weeds,” said Mama.
“There are a lot of flowers,” said Penny.
It’s always joyous when an author can capture that sense of awe and wonder that kids feel. Then the awe is somehow lost by adulthood and everything becomes a chore to rush through. We forget to take time to smell the flowers, We forget to appreciate the little daily blessings. Kevin Henkes, the author, captures this in a sweet way. Kids worry about everything. They worry about doing something wrong, when so often, there really isn’t a wrong way to do many things. Penny gets a doll as a gift from her grandmother. She’s worried she’ll never find a name for the doll. “You will,” said Mama.
This is a level 1 “I Can Read” reader. Some words repeated throughout that could be practiced are:
Penny, Mama, Papa, bow (bow on a dress), buttons, cheeks, doll, dress, like, love, name, pink, rose, roses, said, weeds, weeding, will, you
