What do the book conditions mean?
New books come to us directly from a book distributor.
Like New are from various sources, were well cared for, and don’t look like they’ve been read more than once.
VG or Very Good books have very minor imperfections. These books will be giftable.
Good books may have visible scratches or frayed corners. Some pages may be bent or torn. There may be an inscription inside the cover. Writing on pages beyond an inscription will be non-existent or minor. The binding and pages should be intact. Nothing will impair readability.
Fair books are also known as well-loved. These books will have obvious wear to cover and pages. The spine could be slightly bent. Pages could be slightly yellowed. Writing might appear on the pages. There may be minor smoke or pet odor. You’ll be happy to own, but may not be giftable.
Poor books will have obvious problems. These could have water damage, smoke or pet odor, spine bending, loose pages, or a lot of writing throughout. The book will be readable, but in some way, not attractive.
Ex – Library books will have once belonged to a public library. There may be any number of library numbering marks, stickers, or card pockets. Generally, library bindings are stronger so pages will usually be intact.
Remainder books usually have a “remainder mark” in black or red permanent marker on the page edges. This mark indicates the book was sold through an overstocked distributor. Some may be new, some may have been returned unsold from book sellers. Remainder books in “new” condition have the remainder mark as the only defect.
