Is being a nurse in a hospital like what you see on TV or the internet?
Besides taking excellent care of their patients, nurses enjoyed humor at work before the Covid pandemic. Playing jokes on each other or finding hilarity in absurd situations, we devised ways to amuse ourselves while performing our duties.

DK Paul –
This book, “When Being a Nurse Was Fun” by Ann Watt will resonate with all nurses, or anyone working with people in health care. Non-nurses will recall how all the nurses happily helped us stay comfortable if there was ever a time we needed them. The book is easy to read. Each chapter can stand alone, like short stories. You don’t need any special nursing knowledge to enjoy this book, all caregivers will feel sympathetic.
Ann shares her stories starting in nursing school through the last day on the job at a telehealth center. An early story focuses on the complications of scheduling time for school work and paid work and the all important social activities a college girl needs. She shares one of the disasters that may ensue when we are too tired from juggling our many activities.
There are accounts of several surprising incidents told with a twist of humor. Ann preferred working night shift in the ICU ward. There are several stories about difficult or interesting patients. Still others about aloof doctors or condescending colleagues. And a few accounts of surprising incompetencies amongst the team. Most of the names have been changed to protect the parties of interest.
A few of the stories highlight special social occasions, birthdays, showers, just fun days out as a team. Those were the best times. Our friend and family stories are indeed the most cherished stories to read.
We get the inside nurses scoop on sudden hospital management changes in Rhode Island. The days of hospital mergers and consolidations, and unforeseen bureaucracy are when a lot of the fun dropped out of nursing for Ann. She missed the days, not so long ago, when nurse friends could pull a light prank and enjoy a laugh. This book shares those laughs with the reader.
